Overview

Leyndell, Royal Capital is the crown jewel of the Lands Between — a sprawling, vertically layered city built around the fossilized limb of a fallen Erdtree dragon. Gilded architecture gives way to sewers full of abominations, and Erdtree branches slice through entire districts like overgrown ruins. The city is dense and interconnected in ways that will disorient you on the first pass. Expect to be ambushed by Tree Sentinels on horseback in open courtyards, swarmed by armored knights who hit hard and stagger fast, and occasionally yeeted off a ledge by an Erdtree Avatar. The atmosphere is grand and melancholy — this was the seat of a dying empire — and the threat level is real but fair. At level 80–110 you won't feel overpowered, but you won't be fighting uphill either.

Recommended Approach

Before you even enter the city, you need to clear the Draconic Tree Sentinel guarding the Capital Rampart gate on the Altus Plateau. Don't attempt it on horseback — stay on foot, hug his flanks, and punish the lightning breath with aggressive follow-ups. He's the toll booth, not a warmup.

Once inside, grab the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace immediately and use it as your hub. Resist the urge to push straight toward the Erdtree — the city rewards exploration. Work the outer ring first, hitting the rooftops to the west to reach the Dragon-Burned Ruins shortcut, then descend into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds via the well near the Avenue Balcony. Clearing the sewers early unlocks two significant bosses and completes Hyetta's questline if you've kept up with it.

Against the armored knights patrolling the main thoroughfare, don't trade blows — bleed, frost, or stance-breaking weapons cut through their poise faster than brute force. The Leyndell Knight set they drop is worth farming if you need a mid-heavy armor upgrade.

Key Items

  • Bolt of Gransax — Unmissable if you know where to look. Climb the giant spear lodged in the courtyard southeast of the Erdtree Sanctuary grace and run up the length of it. The legendary weapon sits at the tip and scales with Dexterity and Lightning.
  • Erdtree Bow — Found in a chest in the lower portion of the capital near the West Capital Rampart grace. The best Sacred-scaling bow in the game and a strong Faith build tool.
  • Coded Sword — Looted from a body inside a room off the main hall near the Erdtree Sanctuary. Requires 20 Faith and deals pure Holy damage, ignoring shields entirely. Exceptional for faith builds.
  • Ancient Dragon Apostle's Cookbook [3] — Located in the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds, this cookbook unlocks Dragonwound Grease, useful for the pair of dragons waiting in Deeproot Depths.
  • Crucible Knot Talisman — Reward for defeating Mohg, the Omen in the sewers. Negates knockback, which is situationally excellent for tanky builds facing stagger-heavy enemies.

Boss Order

  1. Draconic Tree Sentinel — Clear this field boss first just to get through the gate. Straightforward once you stop respecting the lightning.
  2. Esgar, Priest of Blood — Head into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds early. Esgar is a pushover at this level range and drops the Lord of Blood's Exultation talisman, a powerful bleed-build accessory.
  3. Mohg, the Omen — Located deep in the sewers beneath Leyndell. He's the lesser Mohg, but still throws Bloodflame AOEs that will one-shot you if you ignore them. Fire damage reduces his Bloodflame pools. Completing this fight also advances Hyetta's arc to its conclusion.
  4. Godfrey, First Elden Lord (Shade) — A golden specter fought in the Erdtree Sanctuary area. He's a pure skill check with no gimmicks — dodge the axe slams, punish the stomps. Treat it as practice for the real Godfrey fight later.
  5. Morgott, the Omen King — The mandatory demigod gate to progress the main story. Morgott is well-designed and aggressive, but his move set is readable. Sacred damage is resisted; stick to physical or Fire. Melina's presence at this fight adds story weight — pay attention to the dialogue.
  6. Valiant Gargoyles — Access Deeproot Depths via the coffin after Morgott. The twin gargoyle fight is a test of patience. Focus the first to death before the second fully activates. Poison works well here.
  7. Lichdragon Fortissax — Available through Fia's questline in Deeproot Depths. Requires completing her embrace chain and receiving the Cursemark of Death. The fight is spectacular and drops the Remembrance of the Lichdragon for the Death Lightning incantation.
  8. Mohg, Lord of Blood — Accessed via a hidden illusory wall in Leyndell's sewers leading to the Mohgwyn Dynasty Mausoleum. Or teleport there via Varre's questline. Use Purifying Crystal Tear in your Flask to nullify his Phase 2 blessing ritual, or you will die to it every single time.

Exit Path

After Morgott falls, Melina burns the Erdtree and Leyndell transforms into Leyndell, Ashen Capital in the endgame. Before that happens, finish every optional beat here — items, NPCs, and questline checkpoints do not transfer cleanly. When you're ready to push forward, your next destination is the Mountaintops of the Giants, reached through the Grand Lift of Rold using the Rold Medallion that Melina provides.
