Overview
Mt. Gelmir is a slow-burn volcanic hellscape wedged between Altus Plateau and the depths of Volcano Manor. The region earns its reputation not through overwhelming enemy density but through deliberately cruel geography — narrow ridgelines above lava lakes, invisible drop-offs, and ladders that seem to lead nowhere useful until suddenly they lead everywhere. The tone here is decadent and grotesque: Volcano Manor is a murderer's lodge run by the serpentine Lady Tanith, and the whole mountain exists essentially as an elaborate antechamber to Rykard, one of the most theatrical boss encounters in the game. Threat level is moderate — the enemies hit hard but move predictably, and Rykard himself is almost disarmingly simple once you understand the gimmick. Come here in the 60–80 range and you'll feel the pressure; arrive at 80–100 and the region largely folds.
Recommended Approach
When you first reach the Altus Plateau and spot the finger-like rock formation to the northwest, start working toward the Bridge of Iniquity Site of Grace. From there, follow the cliff path west past the Grafted Scion field bosses — ignore them unless you want a fight — and work up the switchback ladders toward the First Mt. Gelmir Campsite grace.
Before pushing toward Volcano Manor, take a detour through the valley below to collect the Comet Azur spell from Primeval Sorcerer Azur, who sits on a cliffside southeast of the campsite. Even if you're not a sorcerer, Comet Azur is a trade commodity of immense value and a game-changer for any Intelligence build tackling late-game content.
Once inside Volcano Manor, talk to Lady Tanith and accept her invitation. This unlocks the assassination contract questline, which rewards you with powerful items and opens Rykard's fog gate. You do not need to complete all three contracts to access Rykard, but completing at least the first two gives you Magma Shot and the Scaled Set, both genuinely useful. Also speak with Bernahl, Diallos, and Zorayas — all have quest threads worth tracking. Zorayas in particular is tied to Rykard's post-fight loot.
Explore the manor's interior dungeons carefully. The prison church path through the back of the manor leads to the Volcano Manor dungeon proper and the Abductor Virgin boss, which you should handle before attempting Rykard.
Key Items
-
Serpent-Hunter — Found in a corpse just inside Rykard's fog gate. Pick it up before you even look at the boss. This great spear deals massive bonus damage to Rykard specifically and is the intended solution. It scales with Strength and Dexterity and can be upgraded, though its special property only applies in this fight.
-
Comet Azur — Dropped by Primeval Sorcerer Azur on the cliff east of the Hermit Village. One of the most powerful sorceries in the game; fires a sustained laser beam that staggers most enemies into oblivion when paired with Cerulean Hidden Tear.
-
Raging Wolf Set — Reward for completing two of the Volcano Manor assassination contracts (targeting Old Knight Istvan and Rileigh the Idle). This armor set is lightweight, looks excellent, and has solid physical negations for its weight class.
-
Magma Shot — Purchased from Knight Bernahl inside the manor or obtained through contract rewards. A strong incantation for any Faith or hybrid build, dealing fire and physical damage with good range.
-
Blasphemous Blade — Rykard's Remembrance weapon, obtained by trading his Remembrance at the Roundtable Hold. This colossal sword has a devastating weapon art and heals you on each kill. It is one of the strongest Faith scaling weapons in the entire game.
Boss Order
-
Abductor Virgins — Clear this dungeon boss first. They're located at the end of the Volcano Manor dungeon path. Two Abductor Virgins fight simultaneously, which sounds threatening but falls apart quickly if you bait them into doorways and fight one at a time. Rewards include the Inquisitor's Girandole and access to further dungeon sections.
-
Godskin Noble — Found in the Temple of Eiglay, accessible via the lift from the manor's inner courtyard. At difficulty 3/10 he's not a roadblock, but his rolling attack punishes greedy players. He drops the Godskin Stitcher and Noble Presence incantation. Defeating him also allows you to grab the Stonesword Key behind the altar.
-
Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy — The region's demigod. Grab the Serpent-Hunter immediately, two-hand it, and spam the weapon art. The spear's Ash of War fires a projectile that shreds both phases. Keep distance in phase two when lava geysers erupt around the arena. Rykard talks throughout the fight; feel free to ignore the monologue until after you've won.
Exit Path
After Rykard falls, Mt. Gelmir has given most of what it has. Return to Volcano Manor to complete any loose NPC quests — Tanith has a disturbing final scene if you reload the area. From the Altus Plateau side, push east toward the Erdtree-Gazing Hill grace and begin your approach to Leyndell, Royal Capital. The Capital is the natural next destination, demanding characters in the 80–100 range and offering the critical path forward toward the game's endgame sequence. If you feel underleveled, the Windmill Village in northeastern Altus offers easy runes and a minor boss before you commit to the capital siege.
