Phase Strategy

The Draconic Tree Sentinel is the gatekeeper to Leyndell — a significantly upgraded version of the early-game Tree Sentinel with one critical difference: this fight is designed for mounted combat. Players who attempt this on foot will find themselves punished by the sentinel's reach, mobility, and massive lightning-infused attacks. Stay on Torrent. The entire encounter changes.

Critical: This is not optional content. You must defeat this boss to access Leyndell, Royal Capital. There is no alternate path. Settle in and learn the mounted rhythm.

Unlike most Elden Ring bosses, the Draconic Tree Sentinel does not have phases in the traditional sense — the entire fight is a single, grueling endurance test. The sentinel's moveset remains consistent from 100% to 0% HP, but the pressure compounds as the fight drags on. Stamina management on Torrent becomes the real skill check.

The arena is deceptively large. Use the full space. Circle-strafing on horseback lets you bait specific attacks while avoiding others entirely. The sentinel's AI prioritizes forward charges and sweeping horizontal attacks — both of which leave massive openings if you position correctly.

Mounted Combat Fundamentals

On Torrent, your goal is to:

  1. Stay at mid-range (10-15 meters) to bait the shield bash and horse charge.
  2. Circle-strafe clockwise to avoid the lightning AOEs.
  3. Punish during his recovery frames — one or two jump attacks, then disengage immediately.

The most dangerous mistake is greed. A single extra swing will get you caught by his follow-up combo. The sentinel's shield bash has near-instant startup and will flatten you mid-attack if you overstay.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Shield bash (forward lunge) | Sprint perpendicular on Torrent. Punish with 1-2 jump R2s as he recovers. | | Horizontal sweep (2-hit combo) | Stay outside his weapon arc. The second swing has longer reach than it looks. | | Lightning fireball (ranged) | Strafe-circle clockwise. The projectile tracks poorly at mid-range. | | Lightning stake (ground AOE) | Sprint away immediately when he raises his weapon skyward. The AOE lingers for 3 seconds. | | Horse charge (long-distance) | Roll through him at the last moment if on foot. On Torrent, sprint perpendicular and punish his turn animation. | | Lightning breath (rare) | He rears back and his horse exhales a cone of lightning. Sprint directly away — do not strafe. |

The shield bash is your primary punish window. He telegraphs it by leaning forward slightly before lunging. Sprint to his left (your right when facing him) and circle back for jump attacks. Two jump R2s with a bleed weapon will proc hemorrhage every 3-4 punish cycles.

The lightning stake is his most dangerous attack. When he raises his weapon skyward, a ring of lightning erupts from the ground beneath him. The visual cue is subtle — watch his shoulders, not his weapon. Sprint away for a full second before turning back.

Recommended Loadout

This fight heavily favors bleed builds and mounted DPS:

  • Weapon: Any bleed-infused weapon with reach. Nagakiba with Bloody Slash Ash of War, or Bloodhound's Fang for pure physical. Jump attacks on Torrent deal massive poise damage and build bleed rapidly.
  • Talismans:
    • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction — his melee hits chunk 60%+ of your HP)
    • Pearldrake Talisman +1 (non-physical damage reduction for lightning attacks)
    • Claw Talisman (jump attack damage boost)
    • Lord of Blood's Exultation (attack boost on bleed proc)
  • Flask: Equip Opaline Bubbletear and Thorny Cracked Tear for the opening 3 minutes. The bubble will save you from one mistake.
  • Consumables: Lightning-resistant boluses are pointless — his damage output will kill you in 2-3 hits regardless. Save your item slots.

If you are struggling with the mounted rhythm, Rotten Breath (Dragon Communion Incantation) trivializes the fight. Cast it once at the start, then play defensively. Scarlet Rot will do 40% of his HP over time while you focus purely on survival. This is not cheese — it is a legitimate build path for casters.

Alternative Strategy: If you refuse to use Torrent, equip a greatshield with Barricade Shield Ash of War. Block his shield bash, counter with a guard-counter R2. This method is slower but more consistent for players uncomfortable with mounted combat.

The Mounted Combat Lesson

FromSoftware designed this fight to teach a specific skill: target prioritization on horseback. The Draconic Tree Sentinel punishes players who treat Torrent like a dodge button. Mounting is not escape — it is repositioning. You are trading i-frames for mobility.

The sentinel's attacks have absurd tracking at close range but break down completely at mid-range. Stay 10-15 meters away, bait the shield bash or horse charge, sprint in for 1-2 hits, then retreat. Repeat for 5-7 minutes. It is methodical, patient, and unforgiving of impatience.

Most players who struggle with this fight are fighting against the design instead of with it. The game is telling you to stay mounted. Listen.

On Foot (Not Recommended)

If you insist on fighting dismounted:

  • His shield bash becomes nearly unreactable. You must pre-emptively roll based on his stance.
  • The lightning stake AOE is a guaranteed hit if you are within melee range when it triggers.
  • His horse charge will one-shot you if you mistime the roll.

On foot, this is a 7/10 difficulty fight. On Torrent, it drops to 4/10. The choice is yours.

Related Bosses

After defeating the Draconic Tree Sentinel, the golden fog gate opens to reveal Leyndell's outer wall. Prepare for a difficulty spike — the capital's interior is significantly harder than the Altus Plateau. Stock up on smithing stones and upgrade your weapon to +18 or higher before proceeding.

If you found this fight trivial, Godskin Duo awaits in Crumbling Farum Azula. If you found it brutal, the mounted combat skills you learned here will carry you through Fire Giant and Commander Niall.
