GODFREY, FIRST ELDEN LORD (SHADE)
Phase Strategy
Godfrey's Shade is the spectral guardian of Morgott's throne room — a litmus test before the true Lord of Leyndell. This is not the brutal wrestling match you will face later atop the Erdtree. This is Godfrey reduced to pure technique: delayed shockwaves, wide axe swings, and punishing overcommitment.
The arena is spacious but cluttered with throne debris. Use the space. Godfrey has no phase transition, no grab attacks, no second wind. He is a single-phase endurance check that rewards pattern recognition over reflexes.
Critical: Godfrey's attacks inflict delayed shockwave rings that detonate 1-2 seconds after impact. Rolling the axe swing is not enough — you must also dodge the follow-up ring or take full damage through your i-frames.
The key insight: never roll backward. Godfrey's axe has deceptive forward reach, and his shockwaves expand outward from impact points. Rolling into his swings keeps you inside the safe zone where shockwaves originate but have not yet expanded.
Opening Pressure
Godfrey opens aggressively. He closes distance with a leaping axe slam or a running horizontal sweep. Do not panic-roll. Wait for the weapon to commit, then sidestep or roll forward through him.
His combos rarely exceed three hits. After any combo ends, he pauses for half a second — this is your punish window. One or two R1s, then reset spacing. He will retaliate if you greed for a third hit.
Mid-Fight Rhythm
Once Godfrey drops below 60% HP, his combo frequency increases but his moveset does not change. The danger escalates not from new attacks but from tighter windows between strings. Stamina management becomes critical — reserve enough to dodge two consecutive attacks plus one shockwave ring.
If you summon Spirit Ashes, Godfrey will split aggro but his shockwave rings remain omnidirectional. Your summon cannot tank the rings for you. Lone Wolf Ashes work well here because three targets force Godfrey to waste swings on repositioning rather than chaining pressure.
The Stomp Pattern
Godfrey's signature move is the ground stomp — he raises one leg, pauses, then slams down to create expanding shockwave rings. The rings detonate in sequence: first ring at 0.5 seconds, second ring at 1.2 seconds, third ring at 2 seconds.
The counter is counterintuitive: sprint toward him during the stomp animation. The innermost safe zone is directly beside his planted foot. If you roll away, the rings will catch you mid-recovery. If you stand still, all three rings hit. Sprint forward, roll once through him after the second ring detonates, punish his recovery.
Most players die to this attack not because it is fast but because they treat it like a traditional AOE. It is not an explosion — it is a ripple. Stay ahead of the ripple.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Leaping axe slam | Roll forward on his descent. Shockwave ring expands outward — stay close. | | Horizontal double-sweep | Roll into the first swing. The second swing whiffs if you're behind him. | | Overhead chop | Strafe-walk left. He commits early; movement alone dodges this. | | Ground stomp (triple ring) | Sprint toward him during windup. Roll through after 2nd ring. Punish 2 R1s. | | Running charge | He closes 10 meters in one step. Roll perpendicular to his path, not backward. | | Delayed vertical slam | He raises axe high, pauses 1 second, then slams. Roll on the downswing, not the raise. |
Recommended Loadout
Godfrey's Shade has moderate poise and is vulnerable to Bleed buildup. The fight is short enough that bleed weapons will proc 2-3 times if you maintain pressure.
- Weapon: Uchigatana +15 with Bloody Slash or Seppuku Ash of War. Alternatively, Reduvia +8 for Arcane builds. Bleed procs deal ~15% of his HP per trigger.
- Spirit Ash: Lone Wolf Ashes +4 or higher. Three wolves split aggro effectively and survive long enough to matter. Avoid tanky summons like Banished Knights — they cannot dodge shockwave rings.
- Talismans:
- Dragoncrest Shield Talisman (physical damage reduction)
- Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regeneration for consecutive dodges)
- Crimson Amber Medallion (HP buffer for mistimed rings)
- Ritual Pot Talisman (if using throwing pots as openers)
- Items: Boiled Crab (20% physical damage negation, lasts 60 seconds). Buy from Blackguard Big Boggart at Liurnia's Boilprawn Shack.
For spellcasters, Godfrey is resistant to Holy damage but takes full damage from Rock Sling and Comet. Keep distance and bait his leap attacks for guaranteed cast windows.
Flask Allocation
8 Crimson, 4 Cerulean is standard for melee builds. You will need healing more than FP unless running Ash of War spam. Godfrey's damage per hit is moderate (~25% HP per axe swing) but his shockwave rings chip an additional 15-20% if you mistime dodges.
Positioning Notes
The throne room has two environmental quirks:
- Pillars: Godfrey's axe swings destroy pillars but shockwave rings pass through debris. Do not hide behind pillars expecting immunity.
- Edges: The arena has no death pits, but backing into walls limits dodge directions. Keep Godfrey in the center and circle him clockwise to maintain spatial control.
If you are struggling with shockwave timing, unlock your camera during his stomp attacks. Sprinting toward an unlocked target is easier than sprinting while locked — the camera auto-centers and can disorient your inputs.
Godfrey teaches rhythm. The shockwaves are not random — they are metronomes. Once you internalize the beat, the fight becomes a dance.
Lore Pause
This is not the true Godfrey — it is a lingering echo, a psychic projection left by Morgott to guard his throne. The real Godfrey, Hoarah Loux, is elsewhere. You will meet him again much later, and when you do, he will not hold back.
Pay attention to his dialogue: "I am Godfrey, first Elden Lord... and I have never known defeat." Morgott reveres his ancestor so deeply he conjured this Shade to serve as a final test. Respect the echo. It is more than decoration.
Related Bosses
Defeating Godfrey's Shade opens the fog gate to Morgott, the Omen King — the true ruler of Leyndell and one of the game's most tragic figures. Rest at the nearby Site of Grace, restock throwing knives if you use them, and prepare for a faster, more relentless version of this fight.
If you found Godfrey's shockwaves difficult, Morgott will test the same skill with cursed blade phantoms. The lesson here transfers directly: stay close, roll late, and never greed for extra hits.
