Overview
Liurnia of the Lakes is the vast, flooded lowland north of Stormveil Castle, dominated by the towering spires of Raya Lucaria Academy rising from the mist. Where Limgrave felt grounded and grassy, Liurnia is moody and ethereal — shallow water stretches in every direction, broken up by ruins, carriage graveyards, and the half-sunken towers of a once-great sorcery civilization. Most enemies here are sorcerers, crystal snails, and jellyfish-like spirits, which means magic resistance is suddenly worth caring about. Threat level is moderate; you can wander the lake freely from the start, but the Academy interior and the Haligtree-adjacent northeast will punish underprepared trespassers. Plan for levels 30–60, though much of the open lake is survivable earlier if you stay mobile.
Recommended Approach
You most likely arrive by dropping off the cliff south of Liurnia after finishing (or skipping) Stormveil, landing near the Liurnia Lake Shore Site of Grace. Before charging toward the Academy, spend thirty minutes on the lake itself. Hug the eastern cliffs northward to reach the Academy Gate Town ruins and collect the Academy Glintstone Key from the corpse near Glintstone Dragon Smarag — you can grab it without waking him if you sprint carefully. That key unlocks Raya Lucaria.
Inside the Academy, push straight through to the Debate Parlor Site of Grace before exploring side rooms; enemies here hit harder than the lake exterior and resource drain is real. Clear the courtyard, kill the Red Wolf, then proceed to Rennala. After depositing her remembrance, you unlock the Grand Library as a permanent hub and gain access to Respec via Larval Tears — one of the biggest quality-of-life unlocks in the game.
Once the Academy is cleared, work the lake's edges. The Village of the Albinaurics in the southwest hides an NPC and a critical key item for Volcano Manor. The Ainsel River Well in the northeast opens a major underground region you won't fully explore until later. Save Moonfolk Ruins and the far northeast — the Consecrated Snowfield connection through the Haligtree Secret Medallion — for after you've resolved the main Liurnia questlines.
Key Items
- Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen — Dropped by Rennala. Trade it to Enia at Roundtable Hold for either the Carian Regal Scepter (best pure INT staff for much of the game) or the Rennala's Full Moon spell. The scepter is the stronger pick for sorcery builds.
- Larval Tear (multiple) — Several are hidden across Liurnia: one near the Boilprawn Shack sold by Pidia, one dropped by a disguised enemy in the Village of the Albinaurics. Each tear enables one Respec at Rennala, making them some of the most valuable collectibles in the game.
- Academy Glintstone Key — Required to enter Raya Lucaria at all. Found on a corpse near the sleeping Glintstone Dragon Smarag on the western side of the Academy island.
- Haligtree Secret Medallion (Right Half) — Given by Albus, the NPC hidden as a pot in the Village of the Albinaurics. The left half comes from Castle Sol much later. Together they unlock the Consecrated Snowfield, the hidden route to Miquella's Haligtree.
- Sword of Night and Flame — Locked chest inside Caria Manor before Royal Knight Loretta. One of the most iconic early-game weapons for Intelligence/Faith builds, even post-nerf.
Boss Order
- Glintstone Dragon Smarag — Don't fight him; sprint past to grab the Academy Key. If you want the rune reward, summon your Spirit Ash and bait him toward the water's edge where he has less room to breathe.
- Tibia Mariner (Liurnia) — Found near the Scenic Isle Site of Grace. Extremely easy: dodge the skeleton spawns, smack the boat. Drops a Deathroot for Gurranq and a Larval Tear.
- Red Wolf of Radagon — First real Academy boss. Fast and aggressive but has low poise and takes good stance damage. Two-hand a heavy weapon, break his stance twice, done in under a minute.
- Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon — Phase one is a puzzle (hit the golden students to drop her, then burst her on the ground). Phase two is a dodge-heavy duel against her projectile spam. Spirit Ash summons are active in phase two; use a tanky one like Lone Wolf or Jellyfish to absorb her moon projectile.
- Royal Knight Loretta — Guarding Caria Manor's exit. Telegraphed magic lance attacks, readable patterns. Ranged players have a trivial time; melee players should dodge into her attacks rather than away.
- Magma Wyrm Makar — In the Ruin-Strewn Precipice ravine at Liurnia's northern tip. Tight arena but he's slow. Stand under his neck and attack upward; he'll rarely hit you.
- Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader — Optional Evergaol near the Moonlight Altar plateau (accessible after Rennala). Hardest fight in the region. She leaps constantly, applies a lethal HP-draining debuff on hit, and punishes greedy rolls. Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche (unlocked after her death) makes this manageable; otherwise wait until level 55+.
Exit Path
After Rennala, you have three viable directions. The Atlus Plateau via the Ruin-Strewn Precipice and Magma Wyrm Makar is the natural story continuation northward. Alternatively, loot the Academy Grand Library teleporter to reach an early Farum Azula fragment for a rune windfall. Most players should also open the Ainsel River Well before leaving — the underground lakes connect eventually to Nokron and Nokstella, regions you'll need for Ranni's questline, which itself begins in Caria Manor right here in Liurnia. Ranni's quest is arguably the most content-dense optional storyline in the game; start it now before you forget.
