Phase Strategy

Smarag is your introduction to Elden Ring's field dragons — massive, intimidating, and far easier than they look. Unlike enclosed boss arenas, the open plains of the Meeting Place give you infinite room to maneuver. The fight is designed around Torrent, your spectral steed. Fighting Smarag on foot is technically possible but actively discouraged by the arena design.

Critical: Summon Torrent immediately. The dragon's attacks are telegraphed for mounted combat. Dodge-rolling has too much recovery to punish consistently.

The core strategy is simple: ride circles around Smarag's legs, bait attacks, and punish the recovery windows. Smarag cannot turn quickly — mounted movement trivializes most of his offense.

Phase I — Pattern Recognition

Smarag has no phase transition. His entire fight is a rotation of five attacks:

  • Glintstone breath — a wide cone of magic projectiles
  • Tail sweep — a horizontal swipe behind him
  • Ground stomp — an AOE shockwave centered on his front legs
  • Wing buffet — a forward gust that knocks you off Torrent
  • Aerial dive — rare; he flies backward and dive-bombs forward

The key insight: every attack has a 2-3 second recovery window where his head or legs are stationary. Ride in, land 1-2 charged R2s on his legs, ride out. Do not get greedy. A single charged heavy attack does more damage than three light swings and leaves you mobile sooner.

Smarag's legs have individual HP pools. Once you deal enough damage to a leg (~20% of his total HP), he staggers and collapses forward. His head drops to the ground for 8 seconds. This is your window to dismount and unleash a full combo on his skull — the critical hit zone. Remount immediately when he starts to stand.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Glintstone breath (forward cone) | Ride perpendicular to his face. The cone is wide but short — distance beats dodging. | | Tail sweep | Stay near his front legs. The tail only threatens his rear half. | | Ground stomp (front legs) | Ride backward 10 meters. The shockwave has a 5-meter radius. | | Wing buffet | He rears back first. Ride to his side or behind him — the gust is purely frontal. | | Aerial dive | He always dives in a straight line. Ride perpendicular the moment he lifts off. |

Recommended Loadout

Smarag is weak to Lightning and Pierce damage. Tailor your build accordingly:

  • Weapon: Any lightning-infused weapon. Bolt of Gransax (found later in Leyndell) trivializes this fight, but Lightning Spear or Electrify Armament on a long spear works earlier. Pierce weapons like Great Épée or Pike deal bonus damage to dragon legs.
  • Ash of War: Lightning Ram or Thunderbolt. Both have range and can be used while mounted.
  • Talismans:
    • Lance Talisman (+15% damage on mounted attacks)
    • Lightning Scorpion Charm (+12% lightning damage, -10% lightning negation)
    • Dragoncrest Shield Talisman (physical damage reduction for mistimed dodges)
  • Items: Stack Lightning Grease if you lack lightning scaling. Rowa Raisins to summon Torrent instantly if you get knocked off.

Spirit Ash note: Do not summon spirits for this fight. Smarag's target priority will shift unpredictably, and his breath attack will sweep the entire summon. Torrent is the better partner.

Positioning and Pacing

The Meeting Place arena is deceptively large. Smarag can reposition mid-fight, and chasing him on foot wastes stamina. Stay mounted at all times except during stagger windows.

The safest zone is his left rear leg (your right when facing him). Most of his attacks are front-loaded. If you stay near his hind leg, only the tail sweep threatens you — and it is the slowest attack in his kit.

When he uses Glintstone breath, ride toward his side, not away. Riding backward keeps you in the cone's path longer. Riding perpendicular clears the hitbox in one Torrent sprint.

When he flies backward for the aerial dive, do not panic. He telegraphs the dive with a loud roar and a 2-second hang-time. Ride perpendicular to his flight path. The dive hitbox is narrower than it looks.

A Note on Greed

Smarag punishes impatience, not skill. The most common death is dismounting to "finish him off" at low HP and eating a glintstone breath at point-blank range. Stay mounted until he is dead.

If you are struggling, the answer is almost always: you are hitting him too many times per opening. One charged R2 per punish window is safe. Two is a coin flip. Three will get you killed.

Smarag is not a test of reflexes. He is a test of discipline. Slow down, stay mobile, and let the stagger windows do the work.

Related Bosses

Smarag is the first of Liurnia's three glintstone dragons. After him, you can challenge Glintstone Dragon Adula (southwest Liurnia near the Three Sisters) and Borealis, the Freezing Fog (Mountaintops of the Giants). Both are harder — Adula uses sword combos, and Borealis inflicts frostbite — but the fundamentals remain the same.

If you enjoyed mounted combat, return to Limgrave and fight Flying Dragon Agheel or Elder Dragon Greyoll (who does not fight back but grants 80,000 runes for killing her).
