ULCERATED TREE SPIRIT (ALTUS)
Phase Strategy
The Ulcerated Tree Spirit is not mechanically difficult — it is spatially difficult. This serpentine horror thrashes across the arena with such violence that the camera becomes your primary enemy. Players who struggle with this fight are almost always fighting the lock-on system, not the boss itself.
The single most important lesson: lock onto the legs, never the body. The Tree Spirit's upper torso writhes unpredictably, but its root-legs anchor to fixed positions. Locking to the legs keeps your camera stable and your rolls consistent.
This variant in Altus Plateau appears in a cramped cave arena with uneven footing. The tight quarters amplify every mistake. There is no room to create distance — you must stay close and trust your dodge timings.
The Core Loop
The Tree Spirit has no true phases, but its aggression ramps up below 50% HP. It chains attacks more frequently and recovers faster between combos. The fight rhythm remains constant:
- Stay at leg-distance (2-3 meters).
- Bait a committed lunge or grab.
- Roll through the attack into its flank.
- Strike the nearest leg 1-2 times.
- Disengage before the follow-up.
Never chase the head. The head is a trap. It lunges away from you, repositions mid-combo, and baits you into overextending. The legs do not move. The legs are your anchor.
Critical: If you lose visual contact with the boss during a thrash, unlock immediately and sprint perpendicular to the last known position. Do not panic-roll. Panic-rolling into an off-screen attack kills more players than any single move this boss has.
Below 40% HP, the Tree Spirit begins chaining its grab attack twice in succession. This is the only attack worth memorizing as a true "tell" — if you see the first grab miss, the second is guaranteed within 1.5 seconds. Do not punish after the first grab. Wait for the second, then strike.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Forward lunge bite | Roll diagonally into its body (toward the legs). Punish with 2 R1s on nearest leg. | | Tail whip (180° sweep) | The tail has no forward reach. Sprint into the boss during the windup. | | Grab (hands only) | Roll backward, not sideways. The grab hitbox is wider than it appears. | | Explosive vomit (golden fire) | Sprint directly toward the head. The vomit cone is narrow and forward-only. | | Thrash combo (3-4 hits) | Unlock camera. Sprint perpendicular to the flailing. Re-lock after the final hit. | | Double grab (sub-40% HP) | Roll the first grab, wait 1 second, roll the second. Do not attack between them. |
The tail whip is the safest punish window in the fight. The Tree Spirit telegraphs it by coiling its lower body for a full second. Sprint directly into its legs during the coil — you will end up behind the sweep entirely. Free 3-4 hits on the root-legs.
The explosive vomit looks terrifying but is purely visual. The actual damage cone is less than 90 degrees wide. If you are standing at the legs when the vomit starts, you are already outside the hitbox. Do not roll. Just walk sideways.
Recommended Loadout
Bleed is this boss's critical weakness. The Tree Spirit has high HP but low poise and no bleed resistance. A single blood-loss proc deals 15% of its max HP and staggers it for 3 full seconds.
- Weapon: Reduvia, Rivers of Blood, or Uchigatana with Seppuku Ash of War. Dual-wielding curved swords (Scavenger's +15) is the fastest bleed setup in the game.
- Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +7 or higher. The mimic will draw aggro and proc bleed independently, cutting the fight in half. If the mimic is unavailable, Banished Knight Oleg is the next best — he survives the thrashing better than most summons.
- Talismans:
- Lord of Blood's Exultation (attack boost on bleed proc)
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction)
- Crimson Amber Medallion +1
- Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regeneration — critical for maintaining pressure)
- Items: Fire Grease or Holy Pots. The Tree Spirit is weak to holy damage, but bleed is faster. Use holy only if you lack bleed weapons.
If you are running a pure faith build, Order's Blade incantation (holy weapon buff) combined with Sacred Blade Ash of War will shred this boss almost as efficiently as bleed. The Tree Spirit's Achilles heel is burst damage — anything that frontloads large chunks will outperform sustained DPS.
Camera Management (The Real Boss)
More players quit this fight due to nausea and disorientation than actual difficulty. The camera system in Elden Ring was not designed for serpentine bosses in enclosed spaces. Accept this. Work around it.
Lock-on discipline checklist:
- Lock to the legs during neutral moments.
- Unlock during thrash combos (3+ rapid movements).
- Re-lock immediately after the final hit of a combo.
- If the camera snaps upward to the body mid-combo, unlock and manually re-center.
The worst camera trap is the forward lunge — the Tree Spirit's head exits your screen entirely while its body fills your view. Resist the instinct to adjust the camera. Roll on sound cue (the lunge has a distinct hiss), not visual cue. The timing is identical every time: 0.8 seconds from hiss to impact.
If you are getting motion-sick, lower your camera sensitivity in the settings menu. FromSoftware's default sensitivity is tuned for wide boss arenas. This fight needs slower, deliberate camera panning.
The Ulcerated Tree Spirit is a test of discipline, not reflexes. Stay close. Lock to legs. Do not chase the head. Bleed it dry.
Related Bosses
This is the second Ulcerated Tree Spirit most players encounter (the first is in Stormveil's catacombs or Fringefolk Hero's Grave). The moveset is identical across all variants — only the arena and HP scaling differ. Master this fight and you have solved every Tree Spirit in the game.
After defeating this variant, the Golden Seed reward upgrades your flask count. Continue north through Altus Plateau toward Leyndell — Draconic Tree Sentinel guards the capital entrance and is your next major skill check.
