Phase Strategy

Romina is a test of environmental mastery. Unlike most DLC bosses, she does not have a phase transition — instead, she gradually fills the arena with persistent Scarlet Rot pools that last the entire fight. By the two-minute mark, 60% of the floor is covered. You are not just fighting Romina; you are fighting the shrinking safe space itself.

The key insight: every major attack Romina uses spawns rot beneath her or along her path. Greed kills. Chase her across a fresh rot pool and you will proc buildup before you land a single hit. Positioning discipline is mandatory.

The Centipede Saint

Romina's body is half-woman, half-centipede. Her lower half has independent animations — the centipede legs skitter, turn, and reposition unpredictably while her upper body remains locked in attack windups. Do not trust her facing direction. The centipede can pivot 90 degrees mid-combo without warning.

Her moveset splits into three categories:

  • Scythe combos — her primary weapon, wide horizontal arcs with deceptive reach
  • Centipede lunges — she rears up and slams forward, spawning rot along the impact line
  • Bud explosions — delayed AOE blasts that cover 8-10 meters

The tempo is slower than Messmer or Bayle, but the punishment window is tighter. Romina recovers faster than her animations suggest. One R1 is always safe. Two R1s is a gamble.

Rot Pool Management

Critical: Equip Immunizing Horn Charm +2 and keep Preserving Boluses ×10 in your quick-access pouch. Rot buildup in this fight is unavoidable — the goal is delay, not prevention.

The arena is circular but cramped. Romina spawns rot in three ways:

  1. Beneath herself after every scythe combo finisher
  2. Along her lunge path when she charges forward
  3. Under bud explosions — these linger for 15 seconds

By mid-fight, you will have 3-4 safe zones remaining. Memorize their positions relative to the central pillar. When Romina forces you into a corner, sprint through her to reset — taking one hit is better than standing in rot for five seconds.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Triple scythe sweep | Roll into her on sweep 2. She pauses after sweep 3 — punish once, then retreat before rot spawns. | | Centipede lunge (forward charge) | Strafe-walk perpendicular to her approach. The lunge is linear; side-stepping trivializes it. | | Overhead scythe slam | She rears up for 1.5 seconds. Roll forward through her just before impact. Rot spawns at impact point. | | Bud toss (3x projectiles) | The buds arc slowly. Sprint laterally; do not roll. They explode on contact with ground. | | Spinning scythe (360°) | She spins twice. Roll on spin 1, sprint away from her on spin 2. Second spin has extended reach. | | Bud explosion (delayed AOE) | She plants a glowing bud in the ground. You have 2 seconds to clear 10 meters. Sprint, do not roll. |

The Lunge Mixup

Romina has two visually similar lunges:

  • Short lunge — she skitters forward 5 meters. Punishable.
  • Long lunge — she rears up higher and charges 12 meters. Not punishable; she recovers instantly.

The tell: watch her centipede legs. If the back legs lift off the ground, it's the long lunge. If they stay planted, it's the short one. This distinction decides whether you punish or reposition.

Recommended Loadout

Romina is weak to Holy damage and highly vulnerable to anti-rot talismans. Build around these:

  • Weapon: Sacred Relic Sword, Inseparable Sword, or any holy-infused weapon. Blasphemous Blade's weapon art trivializes the rot pool problem by healing you on kills (does not apply to Romina herself, but useful for clearing the arena pre-fight).
  • Talismans:
    • Immunizing Horn Charm +2 (mandatory — cuts rot buildup in half)
    • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (reduces her physical scythe damage)
    • Crimson Amber Medallion +3
    • Bull-Goat's Talisman (poise to survive clipping hits)
  • Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +10 with a holy weapon equipped, or Black Knife Tiche +10. Tiche avoids rot pools better than any other summon.
  • Consumables: Preserving Boluses ×10. Cure rot immediately when it procs — do not wait for the damage ticks to stack.

Flask Setup

Allocate 8 Crimson, 4 Cerulean. This fight is a marathon. The rot pools mean you will take chip damage even with perfect dodges. Over-heal rather than risk a rot-tick death at 10% HP.

Advanced Strategy: The Pillar Kite

The Church of the Bud has a central pillar. Use it.

When Romina spawns rot pools across 70% of the arena, position yourself so the pillar is between you and her. She will lunge toward you — the pillar blocks her path and forces her to path around it, buying you 2-3 seconds to reposition into a clean zone. This tactic is especially useful in the final 30% of the fight when safe space is minimal.

Do not camp behind the pillar. Romina's bud explosions ignore line-of-sight and will hit you through it. Use the pillar for repositioning, not defense.

Lore Pause

Romina was a saint of the Church of the Bud, a heretical sect that worshipped Scarlet Rot as divine rebirth rather than plague. Her centipede transformation is voluntary — a "blessing" from the Rot God. The buds she scatters across the arena are meant to bloom into new life after battle. She does not see herself as monstrous. She sees herself as gardener.

The Church of the Bud's architecture mirrors Caelid's pre-Radahn design. This fight is not just mechanically similar to Malenia — it is thematically her mirror. Where Malenia resisted rot and became defined by it, Romina embraced rot and became transcendent through it.

Rot is not death. It is the precondition for new growth. Romina's dialogue repeats this mantra. She is not your enemy. You are hers — the sterile Tarnished who refuses to bloom.

Common Mistakes

  1. Chasing her across rot pools. Let her come to you. Wait for her to exit the rot before engaging.
  2. Rolling through bud explosions. You cannot i-frame them — they linger. Sprint out of range instead.
  3. Forgetting to cure rot. A single rot proc deals 15% of your max HP over 90 seconds. Cure immediately.
  4. Fighting in corners. Romina's scythe reach is deceptive. Stay near the center when possible.

Related Bosses

After Romina, the path to Enir-Ilim opens. If you struggled with rot management here, you are well-prepared for the Putrescent Knight in the Stone Coffin Fissure — similar rot mechanics, faster tempo.
