DEATH KNIGHT (TIBIA RIDER)
Phase Strategy
The Death Knight is one of several mounted field bosses scattered across the Land of Shadow. Unlike the gauntlet-style knight encounters of the base game, this fight rewards patience and spacing awareness. The knight circles constantly, forcing you to manage lock-on and roll direction simultaneously.
Critical: This boss takes 50% additional damage from Holy. A Sacred Ash of War on any +20 weapon will cut the fight duration in half. Sacred Blade on a straight sword trivializes the encounter.
The Death Knight never dismounts. The skeletal horse (Tibia) shares its rider's health pool — there is no mount-specific phase. Treat the pair as a single target with extended reach.
The Core Loop
The knight's aggression is deceptive. Most attacks telegraph heavily but track through your first roll. The counter-intuitive lesson: roll late, then roll again. Nearly every combo has a delayed follow-up that catches panic-dodges.
Your openings come in two forms:
- Charge attacks — The knight winds up for 1.5 seconds, then lunges across the arena. Roll perpendicular to the charge path and punish immediately. This is your safest window.
- Overhead slams — After a three-hit combo, the knight plants its weapon. Roll backward, then sprint in for 2 R1s before it recovers.
The arena at Charo's Hidden Grave is open but uneven. The southwest corner has a slight incline that causes the horse to stumble during charges. Use this terrain advantage when repositioning.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Three-hit slash combo | Roll on hits 1 and 3. The 2nd hit has minimal tracking — strafe left. | | Overhead slam (combo finisher) | Roll backward. Sprint in immediately; recovery is 2 seconds. | | Charge (single-target) | Roll perpendicular at the last moment. Punish with jump attack. | | Sweeping charge | He drags the weapon low while charging. Roll into the charge, not away. | | Circling slash | The horse circles you while slashing outward. Unlock camera and sprint toward his back. | | Leaping slam | Rare. He rears up before jumping. Roll on landing, not on takeoff. |
The circling slash is the attack that kills most players. The knight orbits you clockwise while swinging. If you remain locked on, your rolls will carry you into the blade's arc. Unlock, sprint into the horse's rear-left, and re-lock when he resets.
Recommended Loadout
This fight is a damage-per-second race disguised as a spacing puzzle. The faster you kill it, the fewer rotations of its combo loop you endure.
- Weapon: Any straight sword or greatsword with Sacred Blade Ash of War. Lordsworn's Straight Sword +20 with Sacred Blade deals ~650 damage per weapon art. The fight lasts 90 seconds.
- Alternative weapon: Coded Sword (pure holy damage, no smithing stones required). Found in Leyndell, Royal Capital.
- Talismans:
- Sacred Scorpion Charm (+12% holy damage)
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage negation)
- Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regeneration for roll spam)
- Bull-Goat's Talisman (poise to survive chip damage)
- Flask allocation: 8 Crimson, 4 Cerulean. Sacred Blade costs FP; budget for 6-8 casts.
- Spirit Ash: Lone Wolves +10 or Mimic Tear +10. Summons split the knight's target priority and create punish windows during his charge recovery.
If you lack Sacred Blade, Sacred Order or Order's Blade incantations achieve similar results. Cast before the fight begins; the buff lasts 90 seconds.
Alternate Strategy: Guard Counter Build
For greatshield users, this fight becomes trivial:
- Fingerprint Stone Shield +25 with Barricade Shield Ash of War
- Spear or thrusting sword for guard counters
- Talisman setup: Greatshield Talisman, Curved Sword Talisman (boosts guard counters), Spear Talisman
Activate Barricade Shield and hold block. The knight's combo strings bounce off harmlessly. Guard counter after the overhead slam finisher. This method takes longer but removes all execution risk.
A Note on Positioning
The Death Knight's AI prioritizes forward momentum. If you circle-strafe clockwise (matching the horse's natural gait), the knight commits to longer charge attacks that leave him vulnerable. Circling counter-clockwise forces tighter combos with shorter recovery windows.
Most veteran players circle clockwise and bait charges exclusively. The fight becomes a rhythm game: dodge, punish, reset spacing, repeat.
The Death Knight is not mechanically complex. It simply demands that you master the fundamentals — roll timing, stamina management, and greed control.
Rewards & Next Steps
Defeating the Death Knight grants 80,000 runes — a significant chunk of currency for mid-DLC progression. The fight also unlocks merchant access to Death Knight armor pieces from the Twin Maiden Husks (requires Bell Bearing Hunter questline).
If you struggled with this fight, consider upgrading your Sacred Seal or Faith stat before attempting Death Rite Bird encounters in the Mountaintops of the Giants. Those fights use similar spacing principles but punish mistakes harder.
Related Bosses
Other mounted field bosses in Shadow of the Erdtree follow similar patterns but lack the Death Knight's holy vulnerability. Night's Cavalry encounters in the base game are good practice for this fight's circling mechanics.
