Phase Strategy

The Regal Ancestor Spirit is one of Elden Ring's most visually stunning encounters — a ghostly stag bathed in spectral light, surrounded by the ethereal beauty of the Siofra River basin. Unlike most Remembrance bosses, this fight rewards patience over aggression. The Regal Ancestor has no true phases, but it does have a critical healing mechanic that defines the entire encounter.

The arena is massive and open. The Regal Ancestor uses this space constantly, maintaining distance and forcing you to sprint across luminous blue grass to close gaps. Your primary challenge is not surviving its attacks — which are slow and telegraphed — but rather managing your stamina during the long chase sequences and preventing its mid-fight heal from extending the battle indefinitely.

The Healing Mechanic

At approximately 50% HP, the Regal Ancestor Spirit will sprint to the center of the arena and kneel before one of the spectral deer scattered throughout the basin. It absorbs the spirit over 4-5 seconds, restoring roughly 15-20% of its maximum health.

Critical: You can interrupt the heal by dealing damage during the channel. Heavy jumping attacks, weapon arts, and charged R2s all break the animation. Do not let it complete the heal — you will effectively be fighting 120% of its HP pool.

The deer it targets is semi-random but always within sprint range. Stay aggressive when it kneels. If you are too far away to interrupt, use the window to heal yourself and reposition.

Movement and Spacing

The Regal Ancestor is highly mobile. It gallops, leaps, and repositions constantly. Your DPS uptime will be low compared to fights against stationary bosses like Godrick or Radahn. Accept this. The fight is a war of attrition, not a burst check.

The safest approach: sprint alongside it during its gallops, wait for it to stop and rear up, then punish with 1-2 attacks. Never commit to full combos unless it is staggered or locked into a slow attack animation like the antler slam.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Antler sweep (2-hit combo) | Roll into its body on the first swing. Punish after the second. | | Galloping charge | Strafe-walk perpendicular to its path. It cannot turn mid-charge. | | Antler slam (overhead) | The longest telegraph in the fight. Roll forward through it, punish with charged R2. | | Hind leg kick | Appears if you stand directly behind it. Roll backward twice — the second kick has extended range. | | Spectral explosion (AOE) | Triggered when it rears up on hind legs. Sprint away immediately. The radius is ~8 meters. | | Breath mist | A slow forward cone of white vapor. Strafe around it, do not roll — the hitbox lingers. |

The spectral explosion is the only attack with one-shot potential at low vigor. Watch for the rear-up animation. If you see it, disengage immediately rather than greed for one more hit.

Recommended Loadout

The Regal Ancestor Spirit is weak to Holy damage and Bleed. Both are excellent choices for shortening the fight.

  • Weapon (Holy): Coded Sword (pure holy damage, no split scaling), Sacred Blade Ash of War on any straight sword, or Golden Epitaph if you have it from Auriza Hero's Grave.
  • Weapon (Bleed): Reduvia, Uchigatana with Seppuku, or Rivers of Blood if you have reached the Mountaintops. Bleed procs stagger the spirit briefly.
  • Talismans:
    • Holy Scorpion Charm (+12% holy damage, found in Mountaintops of the Giants)
    • Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regen — critical for the long sprints)
    • Ritual Pot Talisman or Claw Talisman (if using jumping attacks)
  • Spirit Ash: Not needed. This is a one-on-one duel by design. Spirit summons dilute the experience and make the heal windows harder to predict.

Consumables

Bring Holy Grease or Sacred Blade Ashes of War if your weapon lacks innate holy damage. The 15% boost stacks with Holy Scorpion Charm for significant burst windows.

Preparation: Lighting the Flames

To unlock the Regal Ancestor Spirit fight, you must first light eight spectral flames scattered across the Siofra River basin. Each flame is marked by a ghostly deer carcass. Interact with it to light the flame.

The flames are spread across the entire map, from the northern cliffs to the southern river deltas. Most are visible from Torrent, but two are hidden:

  • One is on a ledge above the eastern cliffs, requiring a leap from the roots near the ancestral followers.
  • Another is tucked behind a waterfall in the southwest corner.

Once all eight flames are lit, return to the Hallowhorn Grounds grace and ascend the staircase. The fog gate will activate.

Lore Pause

The Regal Ancestor Spirit is not a corrupted beast or a demigod — it is a guardian, a manifestation of the ancestral worship practiced by the shamans of Siofra. The spectral deer you see throughout the basin are not enemies but echoes of a civilization that revered nature and death as cyclical, not terminal.

Defeating the Regal Ancestor grants the Remembrance of the Regal Ancestor, which can be exchanged for the Winged Greathorn (a talisman that boosts successive attacks) or the Ancestral Spirit's Horn (a weapon skill that releases a spectral shockwave).

The Regal Ancestor is not evil. It is a test. To fight it is to honor it.

Strategy Summary

  1. Stay mobile. Sprint alongside its gallops, punish when it stops.
  2. Interrupt the heal at 50% HP. Do not let it complete the channel.
  3. Use Holy damage or Bleed to shorten the fight.
  4. Do not greed. One R1 is safe; two is a coin flip.
  5. Watch for the spectral explosion rear-up. Sprint away immediately.

The Regal Ancestor Spirit is not a difficult fight mechanically, but it is a long fight if you let it heal. Patience wins. Greed loses.
