Phase Strategy

Elemer of the Briar is a spectacle fight disguised as a duel. The Bell Bearing Hunter you may have encountered in the overworld? This is his true identity — Elemer, assassin lord of the thorn-clad. The arena is mid-sized, the ceiling high, and the fight is entirely about reading his weapon. He wields the Marais Executioner's Sword telekinetically, attacking from angles that ignore his body position entirely.

The key insight: watch the sword, not Elemer. His stance telegraphs nothing. The blade floats, rotates, and lunges independent of his movements. Players who lock-on to his chest will eat phantom swings from behind.

Elemer is a single-phase fight, but he gains access to more complex combos below 60% HP. There is no true phase transition — just an expanded moveset. Unlike multi-phase bosses, you cannot heal safely during a cutscene. Manage your flask consumption from the start.

Opening Moments — Bait and Read

Elemer opens passively. He will not rush you. Use the first ten seconds to observe his sword's idle float. The blade orbits him clockwise — when it shifts counter-clockwise, an attack is coming.

His most common opener is a single horizontal slash — telegraphed by the sword pulling backward for a half-second. Roll into him, not away. The blade's arc is wide but shallow. Punish with 1-2 R1s, then reset spacing to mid-range.

Do not greed. Elemer's recovery is faster than it appears. A third R1 will catch his retaliation startup.

Below 60% HP — The Thorn Eruption and Beyond

Once Elemer drops below 60%, he gains two new tools:

  • Ground thorn eruption — He slams his hand into the floor. Three rows of thorns erupt outward in a cone. Sprint perpendicular to him; rolling is too slow.
  • Sword recall slam — The floating blade flies upward, hovers, then dive-slams toward you. The blade glows red for one second before impact. Roll on the glow, not the descent.

His combo strings also extend. What was a two-hit sequence becomes three. The rhythm is: slash → pause → slash → longer pause → slam. Players who expect the pause after two hits will walk into the third.

Critical: Elemer's sword attacks have phantom hitboxes that linger for a quarter-second after the visible slash. Do not walk forward immediately after dodging — pause, then advance.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Horizontal sword slash | Roll into Elemer (not the blade). Punish 1-2 R1s at his body. | | Overhead sword slam | Roll left or right just before impact. The shockwave is visual only — no damage. | | Sword thrust combo (3x) | Strafe-walk in a circle around him. Thrusts track poorly. Punish after the 3rd. | | Ground thorn eruption (< 60%) | Sprint perpendicular to the cone. Three rows, ~6 meters wide. | | Sword recall slam (< 60%) | Roll on the red glow, not the dive. The blade teleports — dodge timing is constant regardless of distance. | | Spinning sword dash | He charges forward while the blade spins. Roll diagonally through him, not backward. |

Recommended Loadout

Elemer is weak to bleed and magic, but his resistance to physical damage is only moderate. Most builds can brute-force this fight with patience.

  • Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +6 or higher trivializes target priority. Elemer divides his attention poorly. If you lack Mimic, Lone Wolves +5 are sufficient — their stagger interrupts his sword recalls.
  • Weapon: Bleed weapons shine here. Uchigatana with Seppuku Ash of War, Rivers of Blood, or Eleonora's Poleblade proc bleed in 4-6 hits. Each proc deals ~15% of his max HP.
  • Sorcery alternative: Rock Sling staggers him reliably. Elemer's poise is low for a humanoid boss. Two casts = guaranteed stagger window.
  • Talismans:
    • Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regen — essential for multi-dodge sequences)
    • Dragoncrest Shield Talisman (physical damage reduction)
    • Carian Filigreed Crest (lowers skill FP cost if using weapon arts repeatedly)
  • Items: Margit's Shackle does not work here. No gimmicks. Bring Boiled Crab or Exalted Flesh for flat damage reduction.

If you are struggling with the sword's phantom hitbox, equip the Bloodhound's Step ash of war. The extended i-frames eliminate mistimed dodges. This is not cheese — it is an accessibility tool.

The Thorn Armor Set

Defeating Elemer grants the Briar Armor Set — one of the few armor sets in Elden Ring with an offensive passive. Wearing the full set causes your rolls to deal damage. Not enough to kill, but enough to interrupt certain enemies. It is a novelty build enabler, not a meta choice.

More importantly, you receive Marais Executioner's Sword — a greatsword that casts the same telekinetic slashes Elemer used. The weapon art, Eochaid's Dancing Blade, is PvP-viable and stylish as hell.

Elemer is not mechanically difficult. He is a timing check. If you can read a two-second telegraph and hold your roll button for a quarter-second longer than instinct demands, you will win.

Lore Context

Elemer is not a knight. He is an assassin — one of the rare few who defied the Golden Order without becoming Tarnished. The briar armor is his prison as much as his weapon. Thorns grow inward, piercing his flesh. He chose this pain willingly. Why? The game never says. FromSoftware leaves the best stories half-told.

The Bell Bearing Hunters you fight at night across the Lands Between are either echoes of Elemer or disciples who inherited his armor. The timeline is ambiguous. What is certain: Elemer died here, in Shaded Castle, long before you arrived. You are fighting a memory preserved by the Erdtree's distortion of time.

Related Bosses

After Elemer, explore the rest of Shaded Castle. The rooftops contain Valkyrie's Prosthesis and Antspur Rapier — two excellent weapons for Scarlet Rot builds. If you are collecting Bell Bearings, Elemer drops Meat Peddler's Bell Bearing, letting you buy infinite Thin Beast Bones from the Twin Maiden Husks.

Your next destination in the Altus Plateau is likely Leyndell, Royal Capital, or the Volcano Manor questline. Elemer is optional, but his runes (23,000) and the Briar Set make him worth the detour.
