MALENIA, BLADE OF MIQUELLA
Phase Strategy
Malenia is the hardest fight FromSoftware has ever made. There is no cheese. There is no easy path. Every player who beats her does so because they learned. The key insight: Malenia heals on every hit she lands, even blocked ones. You are not in a damage race against her HP — you are in a discipline race against your own greed.
Settle in. Most players need 30-100 attempts. That is normal.
Phase I — Blade of Miquella
Malenia opens cautiously, baiting your aggression with single thrusts. The longer you wait, the more likely she throws a slow attack that you can punish. Bait, do not initiate.
Below 75% HP, Malenia can use Waterfowl Dance — the most infamous attack in the game. She floats backward, summons three blade-storms, and dive-slashes three times. Each dive does 50-80% of your max HP.
Critical: Waterfowl Dance counter depends entirely on your distance when it starts. Three different counters for three different ranges. Get this wrong and you die.
Below 50% HP, she can also use her prosthetic lunge — a single-step thrust that closes 8 meters instantly. Roll to her left side (your right) on reaction.
Phase II — Goddess of Rot
When phase 1 ends, Malenia floats upward and unleashes Scarlet Aeonia — a flower-bloom AOE that deals massive damage and inflicts heavy rot. Sprint perpendicular to her landing point during the cinematic.
Phase 2 changes:
- Every attack inflicts Scarlet Rot buildup. Equip Immunizing Horn Charm +2.
- She gains clone slashes — phantom afterimages that follow her dive.
- Her aerial dive-attack travels much farther than phase 1's version.
The healing-on-hit mechanic persists into phase 2. Aggression is still wrong. Bait and punish.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Waterfowl (close range) | Sprint diagonally through her on dive 1. Roll-spam toward her on dive 2. Roll forward on dive 3. | | Waterfowl (mid range, ~10m) | Sprint away from her perpendicular for 1.5 seconds. Roll into the slashes when they connect. | | Waterfowl (long range, ~15m+) | She only commits to one dive. Roll forward into her on the dive frame. | | Thrust combo (3-hit) | Roll into her on hits 1-2. The 3rd hit pauses, then she grabs — dodge backward. | | Prosthetic lunge | Strafe-walk right around her. She always lunges straight. | | Scarlet Aeonia (P2 opener) | Sprint perpendicular to her landing direction. The bloom AOE lasts 6 seconds. | | Clone dive (P2) | The real Malenia is always the highest one. Roll into the highest shadow. |
Recommended Loadout
The "Mimic Tear strategy" is the most accessible path:
- Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +10. Equip your full kit, summon, the mimic takes 50% of Malenia's target priority. This is the single biggest difficulty reduction available.
- Weapon: Rivers of Blood, Moonveil, or any bleed/rot weapon. The healing-window mechanic means burst is more valuable than sustained DPS.
- Talismans:
- Immunizing Horn Charm +2 (slows rot buildup dramatically in phase 2)
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman
- Crimson/Cerulean Amber Medallion (HP/FP boost)
- Bull-Goat's Talisman (poise — survives clipping hits)
- Items: Preserving Boluses ×10. Cure Scarlet Rot instantly. Buy from the Volcano Manor merchant.
If you cannot get the Mimic Tear, Black Knife Tiche is the second-best option — she avoids Malenia's combos better than any other summon.
A Note on Aggression
Most guides tell you to be aggressive. They are wrong. Malenia is a counter-puncher. Her healing-on-hit mechanic means every greedy R1 chip is potential restoration for her. The correct mindset is fencing, not brawling:
- Watch her stance.
- Wait for a committed attack.
- Roll late, punish once.
- Reset spacing.
Every veteran who beats Malenia describes the same realization — the moment they stopped treating her like a Dark Souls boss and started treating her like a duel, the fight clicked.
She is not a wall to break through. She is a mirror. Whatever bad habits you carry from earlier in the game, Malenia will punish them all.
