GODRICK THE GRAFTED
Phase Strategy
Godrick is your first Shardbearer and your first true taste of FromSoftware's spectacle. The fight is structured as a teaching moment — the developers want you to learn lock-on management, summon utility, and patience against telegraphed combos. Take it slow.
Phase I — The Grafted King
Godrick wields an oversized battle-axe and a cargo of stitched-on limbs. His axe attacks are huge but slow. The threat in this phase is not damage — it is positioning. Godrick frequently rolls toward you, repositions, and forces you to break lock-on or get caught mid-step.
Critical: Summon Nepheli Loux at the golden sign just inside the fog gate. She is one of the strongest NPC summons in the game. She will tank phase 1 almost single-handedly while you punish from behind.
The axe attacks worth memorizing:
- Two-handed downward slam — Roll to either side just before impact. Punish with 2 R1s.
- Sweeping ground slam — Telegraphed by him planting the axe. Roll forward through the shockwave.
- Whirlwind spin — He rotates 3-4 times. Stay close; the inner ring of the spin is safe.
Phase II — Dragon's Strength
At ~40% HP, Godrick grafts a dragon's head onto his right arm. He drops to one knee for the cinematic. Heal during this animation. It is one of the longest free windows in the game.
The dragon arm changes everything:
- Fire cone breath — Sprint perpendicular to him. Do not roll; rolling is too slow to clear the cone.
- Fire stomp — He plants the dragon head into the ground. Roll backward, not toward.
- Combined axe + fire spin — Rare but lethal. Keep your distance and bait his axe-only spin instead.
Phase 2 punishes greed harder than phase 1. Limit yourself to single R1s. The dragon arm has its own hitbox and will catch you on follow-throughs you'd survive in phase 1.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Axe overhead slam | Roll left or right, never back. Punish 2 R1s. | | Axe whirlwind (4 spins) | Stay inside his hitbox. Roll on the final spin. | | Body roll | He literally rolls across the arena. Sidestep, do not chase. | | Limb throw | Throws a stitched arm. Strafe-walk left, do not roll. | | Fire breath cone (P2) | Sprint perpendicular, then roll into his side as the cone ends. | | Fire stomp (P2) | Roll backward. The shockwave radius is larger than the visual. |
Recommended Loadout
- Spirit Ash: None needed if Nepheli is summoned. Otherwise: Lone Wolves +3 or any tanky melee summon.
- Weapon: Bleed weapons excel. Uchigatana with Seppuku Ash of War procs blood loss reliably.
- Talismans: Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction), Crimson Amber Medallion.
- Buffs: Fire-resistant boluses for phase 2. Sacred Tear in flask helps with grafted scorpions.
Lore Pause
Godrick is a tragic figure — last in Godwyn's bloodline, desperately grafting more limbs to seem stronger than he is. His final words ("Forgive me, Godfrey... ancestor!") hint at the dynasty's collapse. Don't kill the side-quest opportunity: speak to Gostoc at the gate and the entrance before defeating Godrick, and don't kill him. He has rewards later in Leyndell.
Godrick teaches patience. The fights ahead will demand it.
