Phase Strategy

Decaying Ekzykes is Caelid's introduction to the rot-infected dragon lineage — a single-phase field encounter that teaches you the mechanics you'll need for every dragon fight ahead. Unlike the Ancient Dragons with their lightning or the drakes with their fire, Ekzykes bathes the earth in Scarlet Rot. The fight is not mechanically difficult. The challenge is managing rot buildup while navigating his massive hitboxes.

The arena is the open plateau south of the Caelid Highway South grace. No walls, no cover — just you, the dragon, and the scarlet sky. If you spawn him and immediately realize you are under-prepared, you can disengage freely. He will not chase beyond his spawn radius.

Opening — The Rot Breath

Ekzykes opens almost every engagement with his frontal rot breath cone — a wide sweep that coats the ground in lingering rot clouds. These clouds persist for 8-10 seconds and inflict rot buildup on contact. The correct counter is to sprint perpendicular to him the moment he rears back. Do not roll through the breath — the rot clouds will catch you on recovery.

Once the breath ends, immediately close distance. Ekzykes is vulnerable for 3-4 seconds while he repositions. Sprint to his rear left leg — this is your safe zone for the entire fight.

The Core Loop — Legs and Tail

All dragon fights share the same positional discipline: stay near a rear leg, attack the leg until staggered, then riposte the head. Ekzykes follows this script exactly.

  • His rear legs are safe from every attack except his tail swipe and his backward lunge.
  • His tail swipe is telegraphed by a lateral hip shift. Roll toward the tail as it passes — the hitbox is narrow near the base.
  • His backward lunge covers 10 meters. If he starts stepping backward, sprint forward under his belly to stay in melee range.

When a leg breaks (roughly 1,500 damage), Ekzykes collapses for 6 seconds. Sprint to his head and charged R2 for massive damage. The head riposte window is gold — this is where you end the fight early.

The Rot Cloud Problem

Below 50% HP, Ekzykes becomes more aggressive with rot breath sweeps and begins chaining them into his melee attacks. The ground becomes a minefield of overlapping rot clouds. If your rot resistance is low (under 200), you will proc Scarlet Rot within 5-10 seconds of exposure.

Critical: Bring Preserving Boluses ×5 minimum. They cure Scarlet Rot instantly and cost 3,800 runes each from the Nomadic Merchant in Caelid (Cathedral of Dragon Communion). Alternatively, craft them with Sacramental Bud and Dewkissed Herba — both found near Siofra River.

If you proc rot and have no boluses, you have two options: finish the fight in under 60 seconds (rot deals ~18 HP/sec), or disengage and reset at a grace.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Frontal rot breath (wide cone) | Sprint perpendicular to him for 2 seconds. Do not roll — clouds linger. | | Stomp (front legs) | Stay at rear legs. If caught in front, roll toward his belly. | | Tail swipe (horizontal) | Roll toward the tail base as it passes. The outer arc has longer active frames. | | Backward lunge | Sprint forward under his belly. He repositions 10m back. | | Aerial rot breath (takes flight) | Sprint away from his shadow on the ground. The breath tracks slowly — perpendicular movement breaks it. | | Bite (if near head) | Roll to either side. The bite hitbox is narrow but fast. |

Recommended Loadout

Ekzykes is weak to lightning damage and takes increased damage from anti-rot weapons. The fight becomes trivial with the right setup:

  • Weapon: Lightning Uchigatana (+6 minimum with Thunderbolt Ash of War) or Bolt of Gransax for ranged builds. Bleed also works — Ekzykes is not immune. Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear Ash of War procs hemorrhage in 3-4 hits.
  • Talismans:
    • Immunizing Horn Charm (+90 rot resistance) — found in Raya Lucaria Academy. This extends your exposure window by 30-50%.
    • Dragoncrest Shield Talisman (physical damage reduction) — his stomps and tail hit harder than his breath.
    • Lance Talisman (charge attack boost) — massive value on the head riposte.
  • Items: Preserving Boluses ×5. Non-negotiable unless you are severely over-leveled.
  • Spirit Ash: Lone Wolves +4 or Demi-Human Ashes — summons that spread out and distract. Single-target summons (Mimic, Lhutel) stand in rot clouds and die quickly.

For casters, Lightning Spear or Ancient Dragons' Lightning Strike trivialize the fight. You can kill him from 20 meters without ever entering the rot zones.

Alternative Strategy — Torrent Hit-and-Run

If you have Torrent unlocked (you should by the time you reach Caelid), the fight becomes a mounted skirmish:

  1. Summon Torrent.
  2. Ride to Ekzykes's rear leg.
  3. Dismount, land 2 R1s.
  4. Remount immediately and reposition.
  5. Repeat.

Torrent trivializes the rot clouds — you are never stationary long enough to proc. This is the safest method for under-leveled players.

Lore Pause

Decaying Ekzykes is one of the Greyoll brood — lesser dragons infected by Malenia's Scarlet Rot during her march through Caelid. The rot has decayed his scales and turned his breath toxic. His name is derived from Old English ēac (also, in addition) — he is an additional victim of the rot plague, not its source.

After defeating Ekzykes, you can harvest his Dragon Heart at the Cathedral of Dragon Communion to unlock Ekzykes's Decay — a player-usable version of his rot breath. It is one of the strongest incantations in the game for rot-weak bosses (looking at you, Radahn).

Ekzykes is not the threat. The rot he leaves behind is. Move deliberately, punish greedily when he collapses, and respect the clouds.

Related Bosses

Ekzykes is the first of Caelid's dragon encounters. After him, you will face Flying Dragon Greyll (fire-based) near Fort Faroth and Elder Dragon Greyoll (the mother) south of Fort Faroth. Greyoll is stationary and can be killed by attacking her children — 74,000 runes for a 10-minute time investment.

If you are hunting dragon hearts, the Cathedral of Dragon Communion is your hub. Each heart unlocks a unique incantation. Ekzykes's heart is worth the detour.
