COMMANDER GAIUS
Phase Strategy
Commander Gaius is the gatekeeper to the deeper regions of the Land of Shadow. Most deaths happen in the first ten seconds. The fight opens with Gaius charging across the cathedral floor on his boar mount — a full-screen rush that one-shots most builds. Players who do not know the trick will die forty times before they even see his moveset.
Critical: The pillar to the right of the entrance blocks the opening charge entirely. Hug it the moment you enter the fog gate. Gaius will slam into it and stagger briefly — two free R1s.
After the opener, Gaius fights as a mounted lancer with gravity magic. He circles the arena at high speed, repositions constantly, and punishes passive play with long-range spear throws. The boar itself has a hitbox during charges — if you dodge the spear but not the mount, you still take damage.
This is not a stamina management fight. It is a spacing fight. Gaius wants you at mid-range where his charges are unreactable. Stay close or stay far — never linger in the danger zone.
The Boar Rush Loop
Gaius has three distinct charge attacks, all telegraphed by his stance:
- Single charge — Straightforward rush. Roll perpendicular to him at the last moment, never backward.
- Double charge — He circles and charges twice in quick succession. Roll the first, sprint perpendicular during his turn, roll the second.
- Gravity-enhanced charge — Purple aura gathers around the spear. This version tracks slightly and has extended reach. Roll into him, not away.
The key insight: side-dodging is mandatory. Rolling backward against any charge guarantees a hit. The boar's collision box is wider than it looks and lingers for several frames after Gaius passes.
Gravity Spear Patterns
Between charges, Gaius uses three gravity magic attacks:
- Spear toss (single) — Throws the spear in a straight line. Strafe-walk left. Do not roll unless you are locked into an action.
- Spear rain — Raises his spear skyward; three gravity bolts descend in sequence. Sprint in a wide circle around him. Rolling is unreliable.
- Ground slam — Slams the spear into the floor, creating a gravity shockwave. Jump or roll backward on the slam frame.
The ground slam is your punish window. After the shockwave dissipates, Gaius takes 1.5 seconds to recover — enough for a jumping R2 or a full weapon art.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Opening boar charge | Hug the right pillar at the entrance. He staggers on impact. | | Single charge | Roll perpendicular (left or right) just before contact. Punish as he passes. | | Double charge | Roll first charge, sprint perpendicular 2 seconds, roll second charge. | | Gravity-enhanced charge | Roll into him at 45 degrees. The purple aura extends his reach backward. | | Spear toss | Strafe-walk left. Rolling wastes stamina and mistimes follow-ups. | | Spear rain (3 bolts) | Sprint in a wide circle. Do not stop moving until all three land. | | Ground slam | Jump or roll backward on the slam frame. Punish during recovery. |
Recommended Loadout
Gaius punishes slow weapons and rewards burst damage. Bleed is his primary weakness — the boar's HP pool is separate but shares the bleed proc counter.
- Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +10 or Black Knife Tiche +10. Both survive his charges and pull aggro reliably. Avoid summoning immediately — wait until after the opening charge.
- Weapon: Bleed weapons trivialize the fight. Rivers of Blood, Mohgwyn's Sacred Spear, or dual Scavenger's Curved Swords with Seppuku proc blood loss in 4-6 hits. Each proc removes 15% of his total HP.
- Talismans:
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction — his charges deal pure physical)
- Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regen for chase sequences)
- Lord of Blood's Exultation (attack boost on bleed proc)
- Bull-Goat's Talisman (poise — survive clipping boar collisions)
- Items: Boiled Crab or Ironjar Aromatic for opening survivability. Bloodboil Aromatic for burst windows.
If you are running a mage build, Comet Azur with Cerulean Hidden Tear can delete 50% of his HP during the ground slam recovery. Position at max range and commit when he raises the spear for the slam.
Arena Awareness
The Cathedral of the Forsaken is a circular arena with four pillars. Use them:
- The right entrance pillar blocks the opener.
- The far-side pillars break line-of-sight for spear tosses.
- Gaius cannot charge through pillars — he circles around. Use this to bait predictable pathing.
Do not fight near the walls. Gaius's boar collision can pin you against the stone, and the camera angle becomes unreadable. Stay central or pillar-adjacent.
A Note on Timing
Most players struggle with Gaius because they treat him like a Dark Souls knight. He is not. He is a mounted hunter, and mounted enemies in FromSoftware games have unique tells. The charge startup is not in his weapon — it is in the boar's posture. Watch the mount's front legs, not Gaius's spear arm.
When the boar rears slightly, a charge is coming. When Gaius leans forward but the boar stays level, a spear attack is coming. Learn the difference and you will never be caught off-guard.
Gaius is a test of discipline. Every death to the boar charge is impatience. Every death mid-fight is greed. Slow down, watch the mount, and roll sideways.
