Phase Strategy

Borealis is a field dragon — the fight is designed for mounted combat. Players who try to fight on foot turn a straightforward encounter into a grueling endurance test. The arena is a frozen lake with no cover and no elevation changes. Borealis will punish footwork mistakes with ice breath that covers half the arena. Your job is simple: stay mounted, stay moving, and punish the recovery windows.

Critical: Summon Torrent before engaging. This fight is balanced around horseback mobility. Fighting on foot is possible but exponentially harder — Borealis's breath attacks cover too much ground to reliably dodge-roll.

The fight has no formal phase transition. Borealis uses the same move pool from 100% to 0% HP, but attack frequency accelerates below 50%. The turning point is recognizing her breath attack tells — once you can distinguish the three breath patterns, the fight becomes a rhythm game.

Positioning and Movement

Borealis is a stationary caster. She rarely moves unless you circle too far behind her. The optimal strategy:

  • Circle clockwise at mid-range (10-15 meters). Torrent's sprint is faster than Borealis's rotation speed.
  • After every breath attack, she drops her head for 3-4 seconds. This is your punish window. Gallop in, land 2-3 hits, retreat before she lifts her head.
  • Never commit to more than three hits per opening. Greed is the only way this fight punishes you.

Below 50% HP, Borealis begins chaining breath attacks — two or three in sequence with minimal recovery. Stay patient. The fight rewards discipline, not aggression.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Forward ice breath | She rears up, then exhales a straight cone. Circle left (clockwise) at sprint speed. Do not roll. | | Sweeping ice breath | She pivots her head left-to-right across 180°. Sprint perpendicular to the sweep direction. If caught mid-sweep, dismount and dodge-roll. | | Ice fog AOE | She rears fully upright, then slams down and releases fog in a wide circle. Sprint away immediately when she rises. The fog lingers for 5 seconds. | | Wing buffet (close range) | Rare. She flaps once to push you back. Roll through the gust or simply gallop backward out of range. | | Tail swipe (rear) | If you circle too far behind her, she swipes with her tail. Stay at her flank, not directly behind. |

The ice breath attacks inflict Frostbite buildup. Two full hits will proc the debuff, which lowers your stamina recovery and damage absorption by 20%. Carry Thawfrost Boluses (craftable with Dewkissed Herba) to cure Frostbite instantly.

The tell for each breath attack is in her neck. Forward breath: neck extends straight. Sweeping breath: neck curves left. AOE fog: full rear-up, no lateral motion.

Recommended Loadout

Borealis has baseline dragon resistances but is weak to Fire damage. Fire-infused weapons or fire-scaling incantations deal ~30% bonus damage.

  • Weapon: Any fire-infused weapon or heavy weapon with Flame of the Redmanes Ash of War. Borealis is staggerable — three Flame casts will break her poise and open a critical hit window.
  • Talismans:
    • Fire Scorpion Charm (+12% fire damage, received from Preceptor Seluvis's questline)
    • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (reduces physical damage from tail/wing swipes)
    • Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regen — essential for sustained Torrent sprinting)
  • Items:
    • Thawfrost Boluses ×5-10. Cure Frostbite instantly.
    • Freezing Pots are useless here — she is immune to her own element.
  • Spirit Ash: None. Spirit summons cannot ride Torrent and will be obliterated by breath attacks. This is a solo fight.

Spell Casters

Faith builds should use Flame of Frenzy or Giantsflame Take Thee. Both have long range and fire scaling. Sorcerers can use Night Comet or Rock Sling — neither is resisted, but fire incantations are strictly superior here.

Combat Flow

The fight follows a predictable loop:

  1. Borealis commits to a breath attack.
  2. You circle clockwise at sprint speed, staying outside the cone/sweep.
  3. She drops her head during recovery (3-4 seconds).
  4. You gallop in, land 2-3 R1s or one charged R2, retreat.
  5. Repeat.

The difficulty is not mechanical — it is patience. Players who try to force openings get caught by chained breath attacks. Players who wait for confirmed recovery windows win cleanly.

Below 30% HP, Borealis occasionally uses double breath combos — forward cone into immediate sweep, or sweep into fog AOE. Treat these as single extended attacks: do not gallop in until both attacks resolve.

Common Mistakes

  • Dismounting during breath attacks. Rolling gives you 13 invincibility frames. Torrent's sprint keeps you outside the hitbox entirely. Stay mounted.
  • Circling counterclockwise. Her sweeping breath favors left-to-right tracking. Clockwise circles keep you ahead of the sweep.
  • Chasing her when she repositions. Let her settle. She will return to stationary casting after one or two steps.
  • Fighting on foot. Unless you are doing a challenge run, there is no reason. Torrent trivializes the mobility requirement.

Lore Pause

Borealis is one of the ancient dragons who served the old Dragonlord Placidusax before the Erdtree's rise. Unlike Agheel or Smarag, who are lesser drakes, Borealis retains true dragon intelligence — her breath is colder than natural winter, said to freeze the very air into shards. The Freezing Lake was once a pilgrimage site; now it is her lair.

Defeating Borealis grants the Dragon Heart, required to purchase dragon incantations from the Dragon Communion altar. If you are running a faith build, this is one of the easier dragon kills in the late game.

Borealis is not a test of skill. She is a test of patience. Circle, punish, retreat. Repeat until she falls.

Related Bosses

After Borealis, the final open-world dragons are Dragonlord Placidusax (Crumbling Farum Azula) and Lichdragon Fortissax (Deeproot Depths). Both are far harder than Borealis — if you struggled here, level Vigor to 50+ before attempting those fights.
